Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do nebulae look like colorful clouds?

The Big Idea

Nebulae look like colourful clouds because they really are giant clouds of gas and dust in space! Hot stars light them up, or dark dust lanes make shadowy shapes, painting pinks, blues, and glowing shapes for telescopes. Nebulae are star nurseries and leftovers!

Gas and Dust

Step one: giant clouds of gas. A nebula is a vast cloud of gas and tiny dust grains floating in space. Many are so big that light takes years to cross them.

Starlight Glow

Step two: hot stars make them glow. Hot young stars shine on the gas and make it glow in colours, such as pink and red. Dust can also reflect starlight, and that often looks blue.

Dark Lanes

Step three: dark dust paints shadows. Thick dust clouds block the light from behind them. That makes dark lanes and shapes, like black ink on a glowing painting.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The nebula is a giant cloud of gas and dust. Hot stars inside shine on the gas. The glow paints pink, red, and blue. Telescopes can take photos of these colourful clouds.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The Orion Nebula is a star nursery you can see as a fuzzy spot in Orion's sword. New stars are being born in it right now. Some nebulae are leftovers of stars that exploded. Never use a telescope to look at the Sun.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Search a library book or NASA's website for pictures of the Orion Nebula, with a grown-up. What colours do you see? Can you spot the dark shapes? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
