Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do star clusters look like glitter piles?

The Big Idea

Star clusters look like glitter piles because hundreds or even thousands of stars can be born together from one giant cloud! Gravity keeps many of them together as a sparkling family. Clusters are stellar siblings!

A Giant Cloud

Step one: a giant cloud. Stars start out in huge clouds of gas and dust. One cloud can make hundreds or thousands of stars at about the same time, over millions of years.

Born Together

Step two: stars are born together. Gravity pulls clumps of the cloud into baby stars. They are all about the same age, like siblings born on the same day.

Held by Gravity

Step three: gravity holds them close. Their gravity keeps many of them together in a group. From far away, they blur into a fuzzy, sparkling jewel, like a pile of glitter on dark paper.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! It begins with a giant cloud of gas and dust. Baby stars form together inside it. Gravity ties many of them into a group. And that group is a sparkling star cluster.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The Pleiades, also called the Seven Sisters, is a famous star cluster. Most people can see about six or seven of its stars with their eyes. It really has hundreds of stars in all. Stargaze with a grown-up, and don't use binoculars on the Sun.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! On a clear autumn or winter night, find the Pleiades with a grown-up. It looks like a tiny, misty dipper. How many stars can you count? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
