Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why will some stars someday become supernovas?

The Big Idea

Some stars become supernovas because they are massive and burn their fuel fast! Then they collapse and explode in a giant blast that seeds space with new elements for future planets, and for kids. You are partly made of star-stuff!

Burning Fuel

Step one: a star burns fuel. Stars shine by turning light elements, like hydrogen, into heavier ones. Very massive stars use up their fuel much faster than small ones, in just a few million years.

Collapse and Boom

Step two: collapse and explode. When the fuel runs low, the star's centre collapses. Then the outer layers blast out in a supernova, shining as bright as a whole galaxy for a short time.

Star-Stuff Spreads

Step three: new elements fly out. The blast scatters elements like iron, calcium, and oxygen far into space. Later, those materials help build new stars, planets, and even people, like you.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A very massive star burns its fuel fast. Its centre collapses inward. Then the star explodes in a supernova. The leftovers help make new stars, planets, and life.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The iron in your blood was made inside stars. The calcium in your bones came from stars, too. The oxygen you breathe was made by stars. Your Sun is too small to explode as a supernova.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! List three things that needed star explosions. Try iron in your blood, calcium in your bones, and oxygen in the air. Then tell someone you are made of star-stuff! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
