Why do some young skinks have bright blue tails?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some young skinks have bright blue tails?

The Big Idea

Some baby skinks have bright blue tails! So shiny! Why?

Eye-Catching

Step one: Eye-Catching. Baby five-lined skinks have shiny blue tails. The bright color catches an attacker's eye and draws it away from the head.

Break Away

Step two: Break Away. If a hungry animal grabs the tail, it can break off, and the skink escapes. A new tail grows back later, though it is often a little shorter and duller than the first one.

Fading Blue

Step three: Fading Blue. The blue color fades as the skink grows up. It's a trick that helps the youngster stay safe.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Bright. Drawn away. Escape. Later.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Adult males get orange-red heads in spring. Babies have blue tails. Tails grow back. Blue fades with age.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Color a skink with a blue tail on paper. Draw a dotted line where the tail can break off. Draw the skink running away. Draw a new tail growing back. Label each step.

Outro
