Book 32, Question 95
Why do some young skinks have bright blue tails?
Baby five-lined skinks have shiny blue tails.
The bright color catches an animal’s eye and draws it away from the head. If a hungry animal grabs the tail, it can break off, and the skink escapes. A new tail grows back. The blue color fades as the skink grows up. It’s a trick that helps the youngster stay safe.
