Why does mud get so sticky and slippery?
Mud is soil mixed with water. Clay and silt grains are so tiny that water coats each one in a thin film. A little water makes the grains cling to each other and to your boots. More water lets the grains slide past each other, so the mud turns slippery.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does mud get so sticky and slippery?
The Big Idea
Mud is just soil mixed with water. But it can be sticky one moment and slippery the next! It all depends on tiny grains and how much water there is.
Tiny Grains
Step one: Tiny Grains. Clay and silt grains are very tiny. Water coats each one in a thin film.
A Little Water
Step two: A Little Water. With a little water, the grains cling to each other and to your boots. That is what makes mud sticky.
Lots of Water
Step three: Lots of Water. With more water, the grains slide past each other, so the mud turns slippery. Heavy mud can even pull a boot off, so walk carefully on muddy trails and slow down on slopes.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Mud starts as soil. Add water to the soil. A little water makes it sticky. Lots of water makes it slippery.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Sandy soil makes less sticky mud than clay soil does. Pigs roll in mud to stay cool. Potters shape wet clay because its tiny grains hold together. Long ago, people built homes from mud bricks dried in the sun.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Put a spoonful of clay-rich soil in each of two cups. Add a few drops of water to one cup. Add lots of water to the other. Compare how they feel between your fingers. Wash your hands afterward.
Outro
Mud gets sticky because water makes tiny clay and silt grains cling together, and slippery because extra water lets those grains slide apart. Walk carefully on muddy trails! Science is amazing!
