What is the water table?
The water table is the upper edge of the ground that is completely soaked with water. Rain soaks into the soil and trickles down until it reaches a layer where all the little spaces are filled. Under that level, the ground is saturated. The water table goes up after heavy rain and down in dry seasons.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is the water table?
The Big Idea
Rain soaks into the ground and trickles down. Deep down, it fills every tiny space. The top of that soaked layer is the water table!
Soaking In
Step one: Soaking In. Rain soaks into the soil and trickles down. It keeps going until it reaches a layer where all the little spaces are filled.
Saturated
Step two: Saturated. Under that level, the ground is saturated, which means completely soaked. The water table is the upper edge of that soaked ground.
Up and Down
Step three: Up and Down. The water table goes up after heavy rain and down in dry seasons. Wells reach below it to find water.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Rain falls on the ground. It trickles through damp soil. It fills every gap below the water table. A well reaches down to the water.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! In some wet places, the water table is just below the surface. In dry places, the water table can be very deep. Some ponds show where the water table meets the land. Many towns get their drinking water from groundwater.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Fill a clear container with sand. Pour in some water and watch it soak in. Where does the wet sand stop and the dry sand begin? That line is like a tiny water table. Add more water and see if it rises.
Outro
The water table is the upper edge of the ground that is completely soaked with water. It rises after heavy rain, drops in dry seasons, and wells reach below it to find water. Science is amazing!
