Book 24, Question 9 · Video
What is the frost line, and why are pipes buried below it?
In cold places, the ground freezes from the top down in winter. The frost line is the deepest point where the ground freezes. In southern Ontario it is about 4 feet down, and in colder parts of Canada it can be much deeper. Water pipes and building foundations are placed below that line, so freezing and expanding ice does not crack them.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is the frost line, and why are pipes buried below it?
The Big Idea
In cold places, the ground freezes in winter. It freezes from the top down. So how do buried pipes stay safe?
Freezing Down
Step one: Freezing Down. In cold places, the ground freezes from the top down in winter. The frost line is the deepest point where the ground freezes.
How Deep?
Step two: How Deep?. In southern Ontario, the frost line is about 4 feet down. In colder parts of Canada, it can be much deeper.
Safe Pipes
Step three: Safe Pipes. Water pipes and building foundations are placed below the frost line. That way, freezing and expanding ice does not crack them.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Frozen soil is on top in winter. The frost line marks the bottom of the freeze. Water pipes go below it. Foundations go below it too.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Water expands when it freezes, which can crack pipes. Below the frost line, the ground stays above freezing all winter. Warm places have shallow frost lines, or none at all. Some animals spend the winter below the frost line.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Look up the frost depth where you live. Ask a grown-up to help you search. Draw a house with its water pipes. Mark the frost line on your drawing. Are the pipes deep enough?
Outro
The frost line is the deepest point where the ground freezes in winter. Pipes and foundations go below it, so expanding ice cannot crack them. Science is amazing!
