Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do you cough when something goes down the wrong way?

The Big Idea

You cough when something goes down the wrong way because a cough is a quick blast of air that pushes things out! It clears food or drink from your windpipe. A cough protects your lungs and keeps your airway clear.

Two Pipes

Step one: two pipes. At the back of your throat there are two paths: one for food and drink, and one for air. A little flap called the epiglottis usually covers the air path when you swallow.

Wrong Way

Step two: the wrong way. Sometimes a crumb or drops of water slip toward the airway. Nerves in your throat sense it right away and sound the alarm.

Cough!

Step three: cough! Your body takes a quick breath in, closes the airway for a moment, and then blasts air out fast. The air carries the crumb or water away from your lungs.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! First, a quick breath in. Next, the airway closes briefly. Pressure builds up in your chest. Then the air blasts out, taking the problem with it.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A cough can move air very fast, much faster than a strong breeze. Coughing is a protective reflex, so you do not have to think about it. Sit up and eat slowly to help food go down the right way. If you keep coughing or cannot breathe, tell a grown-up right away.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Next time you eat, sit up straight and chew slowly. Take small bites and swallow before you talk or laugh. Your airway will thank you!
