Why Is Yawning Contagious?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is yawning contagious?

The Big Idea

Yawns can be contagious because seeing or hearing someone yawn can make you yawn too! Scientists think it may be linked to empathy and social bonding. But they are still studying it, so nobody knows all the answers yet.

You See a Yawn

Step one: you notice a yawn. Seeing a big yawn, hearing one, or even reading about yawning can start one. It can even happen when you watch a yawn in a video.

Brain Connects

Step two: a brain link. Scientists think that parts of the brain that help us understand others may be involved. Empathy means feeling along with other people, and yawning together might be a tiny sign of it.

Why We Yawn

Step three: still being studied. Nobody is totally sure why we yawn at all. Some think it helps wake us up or cool the brain, but scientists are still testing those ideas.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Your eyes see a yawn. Your ears might hear one. Your brain responds. And then you yawn, too.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Kids under about four years old usually do not catch yawns yet. Dogs and chimpanzees may catch yawns, too. Yawning is not rude, because it is a natural body thing. If you feel very sleepy all day, tell a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Be a yawn detective with a friend or family member. Notice who yawns after they see someone else yawn. Do not worry if you do not feel the urge, because not everyone does.

Outro

Yawns can spread from person to person, and scientists are still studying why. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
