Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does exercise make you breathe harder?

The Big Idea

Exercise makes you breathe harder because your working muscles need more oxygen and make more carbon dioxide! Sensors tell your brain to speed up and deepen your breathing. That brings in more oxygen and clears out more waste.

Muscles Work

Step one: muscles work. When you run or play, your muscles burn fuel using oxygen. The harder they work, the more oxygen they use up, just like a fire burns more air when it is bigger.

Waste Builds Up

Step two: waste builds up. While working, muscles make more of a waste gas called carbon dioxide, also written as C O 2. It goes into your blood and has to be breathed out. If it built up, your body would feel uncomfortable.

Brain Responds

Step three: the brain responds. Sensors in your blood and body notice the change and tell your brain. Your brain then speeds up your breathing rate and makes each breath deeper.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Working muscles use oxygen. They produce carbon dioxide. Sensors send the news to the brain. And your breathing speeds up and gets deeper.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! At rest, you breathe about 15 to 20 times a minute. When you exercise, you breathe much faster. After you stop, your breathing slowly calms down, usually within a few minutes. If you cannot catch your breath or feel dizzy, stop and tell a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Sit quietly for a minute and notice how your breathing feels. Then march in place for 30 seconds and notice again. How did your breathing change?

Outro

Your body breathes faster and deeper so your muscles get what they need. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
