Book 32, Question 94
Why do hatchling turtles dig out of the nest together?
Baby turtles hatch inside a nest buried in sand.
Each one wiggles its flippers, and the group together digs upward, a little at a time. Teamwork helps them move more sand than one baby could. They often come out together, usually at night when the sand is cooler and there are fewer dangers. This is sometimes called a “turtle boil.”
