Book 31, Question 17
Why do feathers come in so many kinds?
A bird wears several kinds of feathers, and each has a job.
Long, stiff flight feathers on the wings and tail help it fly and steer. Contour feathers cover the body and make a smooth outline. Soft, fluffy down feathers lie close to the skin and trap warm air. Tiny hair-like feathers help the bird feel when its other feathers move out of place.
