Book 31, Question 7

How can a sleeping bird stay on a branch without falling off?

A bird’s leg has long tendons that run down to the toes like strings.

When the bird sits down and bends its legs, those tendons pull and the toes automatically curl tight around the perch. The grip locks without any effort, so the bird can sleep without holding on. To let go, the bird simply stands up straight.
