Book 31, Question 7 · Video

How can a sleeping bird stay on a branch without falling off?

Video · 1:52 · Crafty Clover explains, from A Million Whys Book 31

A bird’s leg has long tendons that run down to the toes like strings. When the bird sits down and bends its legs, those tendons pull and the toes automatically curl tight around the perch. The grip locks without any effort, so the bird can sleep without holding on. To let go, the bird simply stands up straight.

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can a sleeping bird stay on a branch without falling off?

The Big Idea

Birds sleep while perched on branches. Yet they do not tumble off! How do they hold on while asleep?

Tendon Strings

Step one: Tendon Strings. A bird's leg has long tendons that run down to the toes like strings. They connect the leg muscles to the toes.

Sit and Lock

Step two: Sit and Lock. When the bird sits down and bends its legs, those tendons pull. The toes automatically curl tight around the perch, and the grip locks without any effort.

Stand to Let Go

Step three: Stand to Let Go. Because the grip stays locked, the bird can sleep without holding on. To let go, the bird simply stands up straight, and the toes relax.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Run to the toes. Pull them tight. Curl around. Stand up.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Many birds sleep on perches. The grip locks by itself. Tendons work like strings. That's why birds don't topple off branches.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Loosely hold a pencil in your hand. Slowly bend your wrist back. Notice how your fingers curl in a little. Now bend your wrist forward and watch them loosen. Birds use a stronger version of this trick in their legs.

Outro

A bird's leg has long tendons that run to the toes like strings. When it sits and bends its legs, the tendons pull and the toes lock tight around the branch, so it can sleep safely and just stand up to let go. Science is amazing! Keep wondering and keep exploring!
