Book 31, Question 8
Why do some birds stand on one leg?
Bare legs and feet lose heat quickly.
Tucking one foot into warm belly feathers keeps it cozy and cuts the heat that escapes. Flamingos are famous for it, and scientists found a flamingo can stay balanced on one leg with almost no muscle effort. Switching legs from time to time gives each leg a rest.
