Book 30, Question 96

How do scientists figure out how much water a lake holds?

Scientists measure the lake’s surface area from maps or satellites and multiply by the average depth.

For a lake with an uneven bottom, they measure depths in many places and add the pieces together. Lake Superior holds about 12,000 cubic kilometers of water. That is enough to cover all of North and South America in about a foot of water.
