Step two: Average Depth. They multiply the area by the average depth. For a lake with an uneven bottom, they measure depths in many places and add the pieces together.

Lake Superior

Step three: Lake Superior. Lake Superior holds about twelve thousand cubic kilometers of water. That's enough to cover all of North and South America in about a foot of water.
