Book 29, Question 26

What happens inside a seed when you plant it?

A seed holds a tiny baby plant called an embryo, a supply of food, and a tough coat.

When it soaks up water, it swells and the coat splits. The first root pushes out and grows downward, and then the shoot rises toward the light. The stored food powers the early growth until the seedling can make its own food from sunlight. This waking up is called germination.
