What happens inside a seed when you plant it?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What happens inside a seed when you plant it?

The Big Idea

A seed looks like it's asleep! But plant it, and something amazing happens. What goes on inside?

Three Parts

Step one: Three Parts. A seed holds a tiny baby plant called an embryo, a supply of food, and a tough coat. Everything it needs to get started is packed inside.

Waking Up

Step two: Waking Up. When a seed soaks up water, it swells and its coat splits open. The first root pushes out and grows downward, and then the shoot rises toward the light.

Germination

Step three: Germination. The stored food powers early growth until the seedling can make its own food from sunlight. This waking up is called germination.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Baby plant. Early energy. Tough shell. Grows down first.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A bean seed is almost half food storage. Water wakes seeds up. Roots grow first. Then leaves make food.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Soak a bean in water overnight. With a grown-up, gently split it open with your fingernails. Use a magnifier to look inside. Find the tiny baby plant. Can you see its tiny leaves?

When it soaks up water, the coat splits, a root grows down, and a shoot rises, powered by stored food until it can make its own. That's germination! Science is amazing! What will you discover next?
