Why Map Near-Earth Asteroids?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why map near-Earth asteroids?

The Big Idea

We map near-Earth asteroids so we can know their paths early and predict close approaches! Knowing where they travel lets us practice ideas for nudging an asteroid away, if that is ever needed. Mapping is planetary self-care.

Find Them

Step one: find them. Telescopes scan the sky night after night, looking for moving dots among the stars. A dot that moves from night to night could be a nearby asteroid.

Predict the Path

Step two: predict the path. Astronomers measure each asteroid's position many times, then use math to work out its orbit. That shows where it will be years or even decades from now.

Be Prepared

Step three: be prepared. With early warning, there is plenty of time to plan, because small pushes work best far ahead. In 2022, a spacecraft named DART bumped an asteroid on purpose, to test the idea.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Telescopes find and follow the asteroids. Each asteroid is a rocky leftover from the early solar system. Orbit math predicts where it will be later. The DART test showed that a push can change an asteroid's path.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Find them early, worry less later. Near-Earth asteroids are ones whose orbits bring them near Earth's orbit. Experts know of no big asteroid that will hit Earth soon. Space agencies share their maps with everyone.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, do some research! With a grown-up, check a trusted asteroid close approach list. Pick one asteroid and note its date. Is it close, or still very far away? Spoiler: most pass by very far from us.
