Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do dust tails of comets sometimes cause meteor showers later?

The Big Idea

Comets can cause meteor showers later because they leave dusty trails behind them! Earth crosses these old trails as it travels around the Sun. The crumbs hit our air, and we see them as a yearly meteor shower.

Comet Leaves Crumbs

Step one: a comet leaves crumbs. Each time a comet swings close to the Sun, it sheds dust and tiny bits of rock. These crumbs spread out in a long stream along the comet's orbit.

Earth Crosses It

Step two: Earth crosses the trail. Earth's orbit passes through the same dusty stream at about the same time each year. That is why meteor showers happen on schedule.

Crumbs Burn Up

Step three: the crumbs burn up. The crumbs smack into our air at great speed and glow as meteors. Tonight's meteors may be crumbs left by a comet long ago.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The comet is the parent that makes the dust, which is why it is called the parent comet. The dust trail follows its orbit around the Sun. Earth drives through the trail on its own path. The result is a shower of meteors!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Tonight's meteors may be last century's comet crumbs. The Perseids come from comet Swift-Tuttle. The Orionids and Eta Aquariids come from Halley's comet. Always watch showers outdoors with a grown-up, and dress warmly.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, be a matching detective! Match each shower name to its parent comet. For example, the Perseids and comet Swift-Tuttle. Look up one more match, like the Orionids and Halley's comet. Then tell a friend what you found. Share your sky knowledge!
