Why Might Organic Molecules Arrive From Space?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why might organic molecules arrive from space?

The Big Idea

Organic molecules might arrive from space because some meteorites and comets contain them! Organic molecules are carbon-based building blocks, like amino acids. Space chemistry can deliver ingredients, but not finished life. Ingredients are not the cake!

Space Chemistry

Step one: space chemistry. In cold clouds of gas and dust, atoms join to make molecules. Some of these are carbon-based, which we call organic. This happens even without any life at all.

Found in Rocks

Step two: found in space rocks. Scientists have found amino acids inside some meteorites and in comet and asteroid samples. Amino acids are the building blocks that make proteins, which do many jobs in living things.

A Delivery

Step three: a delivery to Earth. Long ago, many space rocks fell on young Earth and may have added these ingredients. But ingredients are not the same as living things.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Atoms are the tiny pieces that everything in the universe is made of. Organics are molecules built around carbon. Ingredients are the building blocks that life might use. Living cells need much more than ingredients.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Ingredients are not the same as a cake. Amino acids are building blocks of proteins. Some meteorites hold more than 70 different amino acids. Making a living cell is far harder than just collecting ingredients.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, practice precise words! Write one sentence that separates building blocks from living cells. Use the word ingredients in it. Use the word alive in it too. Read it out loud to a friend or a grown-up.
