Why Do Southern Skies Show Different Stars?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do southern skies show different stars?

The Big Idea

Southern skies show different stars because people in the south look toward a different half of space! Their 'up' points at southern constellations that northerners rarely see. Your latitude picks your star menu!

Earth Is a Ball

Step one: Earth is round. Earth is a ball, so people in the north and people in the south stand tilted from one another. Their 'up' points in different directions.

Different Views

Step two: different views. In the north, you can see Polaris and the Big Dipper all year round. In the far south, those are hidden below the horizon, but other stars shine instead.

The Southern Cross

Step three: southern stars. The Southern Cross is a small pattern of four bright stars, shaped like a kite or a cross. People in Australia, South Africa, and Brazil use it to find south.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! In the north, you see Polaris and the Big Dipper. In the south, you see the Southern Cross and more. Near the equator, you can see some stars from both halves. And the Southern Cross is the south's famous sky landmark.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The Southern Cross appears on the flags of Australia and New Zealand. From the equator, you can see almost the whole sky over a year. The Large Magellanic Cloud is a small galaxy near the Milky Way, visible in the south. Stargaze with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look up the Southern Cross with a grown-up. Where on Earth can you see it? Can you spot it from where you live? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
