Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does the North Star barely seem to move?

The Big Idea

The North Star barely moves because Earth's spin axis points almost right at it! Other stars seem to wheel around it all night, while Polaris sits almost still. It's the hub of the northern sky carousel!

Earth Spins

Step one: Earth spins. Earth turns around once every day, on an imaginary line called its axis. That spin makes the whole sky seem to turn above us, even though it is really us who are turning.

The Axis Points

Step two: the axis points north. If you stretched Earth's axis out into space, it would point almost exactly at Polaris. Like the stick of a spinning top, that spot stays still.

A Sky Carousel

Step three: stars circle around. The other stars seem to wheel around Polaris all night. It's like horses on a carousel circling around the pole in the middle.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Earth spins around its axis. The axis points up toward the north. Polaris sits almost exactly at that spot. And the other stars circle around it like a carousel.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Polaris is about 430 light-years away. Over thousands of years, a different star becomes the North Star. In the far south of Earth, you cannot see Polaris at all, because it stays below the horizon. Take pictures at night with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, take a long-exposure photo of the northern sky. A phone's night mode on a steady stand works well. You will see star trails circling around Polaris! Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Outro

Polaris is the center of the northern sky's spin. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
