Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is the Milky Way a pale band?

The Big Idea

The Milky Way is a pale band because we live inside a giant flat galaxy of stars! When you look along the galaxy's flat edge, millions of far away suns blend into a soft, milky river across the sky. You are seeing our galaxy edge-on!

A Flat Galaxy

Step one: our galaxy is flat. The Milky Way is a huge, flat spiral of stars, gas, and dust, shaped a bit like a pancake. Our Sun is just one of its hundreds of billions of stars.

We Are Inside

Step two: we live inside it. Our solar system sits inside the flat disk, about halfway out from the middle. So when we look along the disk, we see lots and lots of stars in one direction.

A Milky River

Step three: the stars blend together. Millions of stars are too far away and too close together in the sky to see one by one, so they blur into a glow. Long ago, people thought it looked like spilled milk!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Our galaxy is a giant spiral of stars. It is flat, like a pancake. We look at it from inside, along its edge. And that shows up as a pale band in the sky.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The Milky Way has hundreds of billions of stars. It is about 100,000 light-years across. The word galaxy comes from a Greek word for milk. Stargaze with a grown-up, far from city lights.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! On a dark night, away from city lights, hunt for the Milky Way's glow. Go with a grown-up, and let your eyes adjust for a few minutes. Can you see the pale river? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
