Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can you see different constellations in winter than in summer?

The Big Idea

You see different constellations in winter and summer because Earth travels around the Sun! As the months pass, Earth moves along its orbit, so at night we face a different part of space. Orion rides high on winter nights, while Scorpius climbs the summer sky. The stars did not move, but our view did.

Earth Circles the Sun

Step one: Earth travels around the Sun. Our planet takes one year to make a full loop. It's like riding a merry-go-round that goes very slowly. Every month, we are in a different spot on the ride.

Night Faces Out

Step two: at night, we face away from the Sun. Night is the time when your side of Earth looks out into deep space. But as Earth moves along its orbit, the part of space we face keeps changing. Different stars come into view.

Winter and Summer Stars

Step three: each season has its own stars. Orion rides high on winter nights, while Scorpius climbs the summer sky. Near the North Pole, some constellations, like the Big Dipper, never set at all. The sky changes like a slow story.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! In winter, we face one part of space at night. That is where Orion shines. In summer, Earth is on the other side of its orbit. Now Scorpius climbs the sky.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Earth orbits the Sun once a year. Different stars rise as the seasons change. Some northern stars, like the Big Dipper, never set. Use a sky map app to name your constellations.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! On a clear night each season, go out with a grown-up. Use a sky map app to name two constellations. Write down the date. Compare the seasons.

Outro

Earth's journey gives us a new sky each season. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
