Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do city lights hide the stars?

The Big Idea

City lights hide the stars because they make the night sky glow! Streetlights and signs bounce light into the air, and that skyglow washes out faint stars, like a bright room makes a nightlight seem weak. That is called light pollution!

Lots of Lights

Step one: cities have lots of lights. Streetlights, signs, and windows shine all night long. Some of that light shoots upward instead of toward the ground, where it is needed.

Skyglow

Step two: the light bounces. Tiny bits of dust and water in the air bounce the light around. That makes a hazy glow above the city, called skyglow.

Faint Stars Fade

Step three: dim stars disappear. Faint stars are much weaker than the glow, so you can't see them. It's like trying to see a nightlight in a brightly lit room.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Lights send light up into the air. The air scatters it into a glowing haze. Faint stars get lost inside the haze. In a dark park, far from the lights, many more stars appear.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! In a big city you might see only a few dozen stars. In a very dark place, you can see thousands. Shielded lights that point down help save the stars. Visit dark places with a grown-up, never alone.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, compare the stars from a bright street and a darker park. Count how many stars you can see in each place, using just your eyes. Where do you see more? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
