Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do ships have rules about ballast water?

The Big Idea

Ships take in ballast water to stay balanced, and let it out later. That water can carry tiny animals, plants, and larvae across the ocean. A ship's belly can sneak a whole zoo from one harbor to another!

Step 1

Step one: a ship takes water aboard. When a ship has less cargo, it pumps in water to stay steady and balanced.

Step 2

Step two: tiny lives come too. Little animals, plants, and larvae get pumped in along with the water. Then the ship crosses an ocean.

Step 3

Step three: the water is dumped. In a new port, the water is released, and the hitchhikers go with it. Some can explode in number and crowd out native life.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at ballast! The ballast tank is the big space that holds the water. The pump moves water in and out of the ship. And hitchhiking larvae are the tiny passengers that come along.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Zebra mussels reached the Great Lakes in ballast water and changed the food web. A hidden hitchhiker in a new harbor can multiply fast. Exchanging water at sea and treatment systems cut the surprise zoo. Ballast work is for professional crews, so watch ships from a pier with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Why is a tiny hitchhiker enough to change a lake? What two rules shrink the risk? With a grown-up, look up where the nearest big port is and what ships come to it.

Outro

Ballast rules keep one harbor from inheriting another harbor's pests. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
