Intro
Hi, explorers! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some coasts restore dunes?
The Big Idea
A dune is a sand hill held together by roots. It's a living wall that can grow back after a storm! Some towns plant beach grass and put up sand fences to help dunes rebuild. Rebuilt dunes protect the coast and store sand.
Step 1
Step one: a storm flattens the hill. Strong storm waves can wash a dune down to flat sand.
Step 2
Step two: fences slow the wind. Wooden fences slow the wind, so the wind drops its sand. The sand piles up behind the fence.
Step 3
Step three: grass roots stitch the pile. Beach grass is planted, and its long roots stitch the sand together. Then the next storm hits a softer, stronger wall.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a dune! The fence slows the wind so sand can drop. Grass roots stitch the sand together. The dune crest is the top of the sand hill. And the path keeps our feet off the grass.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Dunes naturally move, and restoration works with that motion. Roots can beat a concrete wall for a beach, because they bend instead of bouncing waves back. Stay on boardwalks, because walking on dunes can kill the grass that holds them together. A sand fence hires the wind as a builder.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Why do roots beat a concrete wall for a beach? What two jobs does a fence do? With a grown-up, build a small sand pile in a tray, blow on it gently, and see how a barrier changes where the sand lands.
Outro
A restored dune is a hill that the wind and roots build together. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
