Intro

Ahoy, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is dumping aquarium fish in the sea a bad idea?

The Big Idea

Aquarium fish, plants, and snails can survive and breed in places they don't belong. If they escape into the wild, they can crowd out the native animals. A tank pet can become a wild bully in the wrong neighborhood!

Step 1

Step one: someone dumps a fish. Someone thinks letting a pet fish go is kind, but it often isn't.

Step 2

Step two: the fish survives and eats local babies. With no predators, extra food, and mild winters, the fish does well. It may eat the young of local fish.

Step 3

Step three: it breeds and the neighborhood changes. One dumped pet can turn into many, and native animals get crowded out. That is called an invasive species.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at how trouble starts! The tank is the safe place the fish belongs. Dumping at a dock is where the trouble begins. And a lionfish on a reef shows what an invader can do.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Lionfish in the Atlantic are believed to have started as tank fish, and now they trouble reefs. Invasive species can push out native animals. Setting a pet free isn't mercy if the habitat is wrong. Rehome pets through shops or clubs instead.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Why might a pretty fish win too well? What two better endings exist for an unwanted pet? With a grown-up, look up a local aquarium club that rehomes pets.

Outro

The kindest release is a new home, not a new invasion. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
