Intro

Hello, ocean explorers! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why should you put a shell back if a creature is inside?

The Big Idea

A pretty shell on the beach might have a snail, a hermit crab, or a clam inside. Taking it home means taking a living animal away from its home in the sea. That pretty house is still somebody's living room!

Step 1

Step one: pick the shell up gently. Hold it softly, because a living animal might be inside.

Step 2

Step two: look for feet, claws, or a door. A hermit crab may show its claws, and a snail may have a little hard door called an operculum. If it moves or smells alive, stop.

Step 3

Step three: set it back in a pool. Gently put the shell opening-down in a tide pool or shallow water, then wash your hands. Keep only a truly empty shell, if it's allowed.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look inside a shell! The operculum is the little door a snail uses to close its shell. Hermit claws show that a crab has tucked inside. And an empty spiral is the open space with nobody home.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Hermit crabs need empty shells to move into as they grow. Some parks ban all collecting, even of empty shells. The sign beats a souvenir, so follow the rules. A live shell is an animal wearing its house.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Why is an empty shell still useful on the beach? What two clues say still home? With a grown-up, look at shells in a tide pool or photo, and count the clues of life.
