Intro

Welcome aboard, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do fishers use limits and seasons?

The Big Idea

A limit caps how many fish a boat may keep. A season closes the water during spawning, when fish are making babies. Both leave breeders in the water, so there are still fish later. Leave some fish for later, and later still has fish!

Step 1

Step one: scientists count the stock. Scientists count and measure fish to see how many are left, and how many babies are coming.

Step 2

Step two: a limit is set. Officials use those counts to set a limit on how many fish can be kept. Size rules can also protect the young and the big breeders.

Step 3

Step three: spawning time is protected. During a closed season, fish can breed in peace, like a birthday party for baby fish. Next year still has a catch!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the rules! A measuring board shows if a fish is big enough to keep. A calendar of closed days shows when fishing stops to protect spawning. And the leftover school is the group of fish that stay in the water to breed.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Rules fail if they're only on paper, so honest counts matter. Breeders left behind make the next generation of fish. A closed season is like a birthday party for baby fish. Fishers follow posted rules, and grown-ups check their licenses.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Why protect the spawning week? What happens if every big breeder is taken? With a grown-up, look up the fishing rules in your area and spot a limit and a season.

Outro

Limits and seasons are how a catch lasts more than one summer. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
