Intro

Ahoy, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do wetlands protect towns from storms?

The Big Idea

Wetlands, like salt marshes and mangroves, act like a sponge and a speed bump for storm water. They are places where land and sea mix. Their plants slow the flow, and their shallow ponds store water. They take the first punch, so the town behind gets less flooding.

Step 1

Step one: a surge or river rushes in. Storm water pushes toward the coast with a lot of energy. It can flood streets and homes if nothing slows it down.

Step 2

Step two: plants slow the flow. Stems and roots rub against the water, and that friction slows it down. It is like a thick forest of tiny speed bumps.

Step 3

Step three: water spreads into the sponge. The water spreads out into shallow ponds, and its energy drops. The town behind gets less flooding!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a wetland! Marsh plants have tall stems that slow the water. Roots hold the mud in place and help it flex. And the town behind gets protected by it all.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Healthy marshes can be cheaper than rebuilding houses. Mangroves are trees that grow in warm coastal wetlands. Filling a wetland for a parking lot spends the town's free shield. Stay on boardwalks, because marsh mud can hide holes.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Why does friction matter in a flood? What two jobs do roots do? With a grown-up, pour water across a tray with, then without, a patch of sponge or grass.

Outro

Wetlands are living bumpers on the edge of town. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
