Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is plastic in the ocean a problem?

The Big Idea

Plastic is built not to rot, so it lasts a very long time in the sea. Waves and sunlight break it into smaller and smaller bits, but those bits don't turn into food. Animals can eat it, get tangled in it, or carry it far away.

Step 1

Step one: trash blows or washes to sea. Litter on streets and beaches can blow or wash into rivers and out to the ocean.

Step 2

Step two: waves break it into bits. Sunlight and waves crack plastic into smaller pieces, called microplastics when they are tiny.

Step 3

Step three: an animal mistakes a bit for food. A sea turtle may mistake a bag for a jellyfish, and its stomach can fill with plastic that it can't digest. The problem then spreads on the currents.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at plastic trouble! A bottle can drift for years across the sea. Fragments are tiny bits that spread everywhere. Mistaken food is plastic that an animal swallows by accident. And a tangle is when an animal gets caught in plastic.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A bottle cap from a picnic can travel farther than the picnic family. Tiny bits of plastic are not gone, they are just harder to see. Using less single-use plastic on land is the cheapest ocean cleanup. Pick up beach trash with a grown-up, and leave floating nets to trained crews.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Why don't tiny bits count as gone? What two harms can one bag cause? With a grown-up, count the single-use plastic items you use in a day.

Outro

Plastic in the ocean is a long guest that never becomes a meal. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
