Intro

Hello, ocean explorers! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do sea walls sometimes make beaches worse?

The Big Idea

A sea wall is a hard barrier that protects buildings from waves. But a wall bounces wave energy back instead of absorbing it. That churns up the sand and carries it away. So the house stays dry, but the beach in front can get narrower.

Step 1

Step one: a wave hits hard concrete. A natural beach gives a little, but concrete doesn't, so the wave has nowhere to go.

Step 2

Step two: energy bounces back. The wave energy reflects off the wall and comes back into the water. That swirling water lifts the sand and carries it away.

Step 3

Step three: the beach thins. With less sand in front, the next wave hits even harder, and the beach gets narrower.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a sea wall! The wall is the hard barrier that stands between the sea and the town. The reflected wave is the energy that bounces back from the wall. And the missing sand is the sand that gets scooped out in front. Behind the wall is the house it protects.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Walls can be useful, but they are a trade, not a free gift. Some towns now use dunes and marshes as softer shields. A beach protects by bending, while a wall protects one line. Sea walls are slippery, so stay on public paths with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Where does the wave energy go if the sand can't move? What softer shield could take a hit? With a grown-up, push a wave in a tray with sand, first with a block wall and then without it.

Outro

A wall protects a line, but a beach protects by bending. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
