Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why did sailors use stars to find their way?

The Big Idea

Before GPS, sailors found their way by measuring the angle of a star above the horizon. Add the exact time, and that helps tell where you are. The night sky is like a giant clock and map, if you know which stars to use!

Pick a Known Star

Step one: pick a known star. Sailors learned the names and places of bright stars. One special star is Polaris, the North Star, which stays near the north pole of the sky.

Measure Its Height

Step two: measure its height. A tool called a sextant measures the star's angle above the horizon. The higher Polaris looks, the farther north you are!

Use Time and Tables

Step three: note the exact time, then look up the tables. Sailors wrote down the time and used a book of tables. Then they marked a line on their chart!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at taking a star sighting! The horizon is the line where the sea meets the sky. The star is the bright light sailors aim at. The sextant angle is how high the star is above the horizon. And latitude tells how far north or south you are. Stars can be a map, because they stay in predictable places.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A sextant is a fancy angle-measurer. Sailors used a book of tables to do the calculations. Clouds can hide the stars, which is why lighthouses and clocks were also vital. Stargaze on land with a grown-up. Ships are not playgrounds.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Let's think about stars. Why does a higher Pole Star mean you are farther north? What do sailors lose on a cloudy night? With a grown-up, try to find the North Star on a clear night. Stargaze safely, on land.

Stars can be a map for sailors. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
