Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a lighthouse flash?

The Big Idea

A lighthouse is a tall lamp with a fingerprint. Each one flashes its own pattern, like long, short, pause. That pattern tells sailors, this cape, not that one!

The Lamp Flashes a Pattern

Step one: the lamp turns on in a pattern. It flashes a code, such as two quick flashes and a pause. No two nearby lights use the same code.

A Sailor Counts the Flashes

Step two: a sailor counts the flashes. A sailor watches the light through the night and counts. How many flashes? How long is the pause?

The Chart Matches the Code

Step three: the chart matches the code. A nautical chart lists each light and its flash pattern. Now the ship knows exactly which point it is looking at!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a lighthouse's lantern room! The lamp makes the light. The lens bends the light into a strong beam. The flash pattern is the code of long and short flashes. And the chart note is where sailors look up the code. A flash is a name written in light!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! One steady glow could be a town or a campfire, so a coded flash is much clearer. Old lighthouses used big spinning lenses, and many now use timed lamps and solar panels. GPS helps now, but a light still works when screens fail. Working lighthouses are work sites. Visit a museum tower with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Let's think about signals. Why blink instead of staying on? What two clues tell you which lighthouse it is? With a flashlight and a friend, invent a code of long and short flashes. Can your friend guess your code?
