Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is a compass needle twitchy on a ship?

The Big Idea

A magnetic compass needle points toward Earth's magnetic north. But a steel ship has its own magnetic pulls, from the steel hull, engines, and electric wires. So the needle gets tugged around and wanders!

The Needle Seeks North

Step one: the needle seeks magnetic north. Earth acts like a giant magnet, and a compass needle lines up with it. On land, away from steel, it usually points the right way.

Steel Tugs on It

Step two: steel and wires tug on the needle. A ship's steel hull, engines, and electric wires make their own magnetic pulls. These pulls mix with Earth's pull.

A Correction Helps

Step three: the reading drifts, and a correction brings it back. Crews place small correcting magnets near the compass and use tables of errors. Then the needle points much closer to the truth!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a ship's compass! The needle tries to point to magnetic north. The card is the round face marked with degrees. And the nearby steel hull is what tugs on the needle. A compass is honest. The ship is a magnet in disguise!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Sailors used to swing a ship in a circle to find the compass errors. A gyrocompass is a different kind of compass that is not affected by steel. Phones and magnets can confuse a pocket compass too. Use a handheld compass on land with a grown-up, and leave ship instruments alone.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Let's think about compasses. Why would a wooden boat bother a needle less? What extra tool ignores magnetism? With a grown-up, hold a magnet near a compass. What does the needle do? Remember, leave real ship instruments alone.

Outro

A compass is honest. The ship is a magnet in disguise. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
