Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do big ships have such small-looking propellers?

The Big Idea

A big ship's propeller looks small next to its huge hull. But up close, its blades can be taller than a person! It pushes water backward, and the ship moves forward.

The Engine Turns a Shaft

Step one: the engine turns a shaft. A giant engine spins a long metal shaft. The shaft turns the propeller at the back of the ship.

Blades Push Water Back

Step two: the blades scoop water. Each blade is shaped like a twisted wing, so it grips the water well. They shove water backward.

The Hull Is Pushed Forward

Step three: the hull is pushed forward. When water is pushed backward, the ship is pushed forward. Slow, powerful spins work well for a giant ship!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a ship's propeller! The blades are the twisted wings that push the water. The hub is the center that holds the blades. The shaft carries the engine's spin. And the water jet is the stream flowing backward. A small-looking propeller is really a giant fan!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some ships have two propellers, which are sometimes called screws. Some propellers have a protective ring called a shroud around the blades. Small-looking is a camera trick next to a giant hull. Propellers are hidden and dangerous, so stay at the dock rail with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Let's think about pushing water. Why push a lot of water slowly? What would a tiny airplane-style propeller do on a huge tanker? Use your hand like a paddle to push water backward in a bathtub. Which way do you move? Always keep clear of the water near boats.

Outro

A ship's fan is huge. The hull is just huger. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
