Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is a kelp forest so tall?

The Big Idea

Giant kelp is a seaweed that races toward the light! It is a kind of algae, not a tree with wood. Even so, it can grow from the seafloor all the way up to the surface, as tall as a tree.

A Holdfast Grips

Step one: a holdfast grips the rock. The holdfast looks like roots, but it only holds on tight. It does not drink water like a tree root does.

A Stipe Grows Up

Step two: a stipe grows up. The stipe is the stem, and it can grow up to about 2 feet in a single day! Blades sprout along it to catch light.

Floats Lift the Tips

Step three: floats lift the tips. Little gas-filled bladders act like tiny balloons. They hold the blades up near the surface, where the canopy spreads out in the sun.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a kelp plant! The holdfast grips the rock on the seafloor. The stipe is the long stem. A blade is a leaf-like part that catches sunlight. And a float is a gas-filled bulb that holds the blade up. Holdfast, stipe, blade, and float, working together!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Giant kelp can reach around 100 feet tall or even more. Cold, nutrient-rich water helps kelp forests thrive. Kelp forests are home to fish, sea urchins, and sea otters. Always look from a boat or pier with a grown-up, and never wrap yourself in wild kelp.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Let's think about tall kelp. Why does kelp race to the surface? What does a holdfast do instead of roots? Why might cold currents feed these forests? Think of a plant on land. How is it different from kelp?

Outro

A kelp forest is a seaweed skyscraper, not a wood tree. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
