Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can't you stand on coral?

The Big Idea

Coral looks like a rock, but it is alive! It is a thin layer of living animals called polyps growing on a skeleton they built. One step can crush years of slow growth in a single second.

A Foot Lands

Step one: a foot lands. A fin or a shoe presses down on the reef. To the tiny animals that live there, it is like a wrecking ball.

Tissue Tears

Step two: the living tissue tears. The thin, soft layer on the outside gets scraped and crushed. Cuts like these can also let germs in.

Branch Snaps

Step three: the branch snaps. Many corals are fragile and break easily. A broken branch may die, and it leaves a hole in the reef city.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look inside a coral branch! The outside is the colorful living tissue. Inside is the hard skeleton, made of limestone. And this is a broken branch, with a jagged edge where the coral was hurt. Remember, the rock-like part is covered by living animals!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some corals grow only about as fast as a fingernail. Even bumping the reef with a camera counts as touching it. Polyps are usually only a few millimeters wide, smaller than a pea. Look with your eyes, not your hands.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Let's think about slow growth. Why does slow growth make one step so costly? What is the rock-like reef covered with? If you ever visit a reef, float, keep your fins up, and let a grown-up pick the swim spot. Draw a picture of a kind reef visitor.

Outro

If it is living reef, it is not a sidewalk. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
