Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does kelp have floats?

The Big Idea

Kelp grows little gas-filled floats right next to its leaves, which are called blades. The floats work like life jackets, lifting the blades up toward the sunlight. Sunlight is brightest near the surface, so the floats help the kelp make food!

Make a Gas Pocket

Step one: the plant makes a gas pocket. Next to each blade, the kelp grows a little bulb filled with gas. Gas is lighter than water, so it wants to float.

The Float Lifts

Step two: the float lifts. The bulb pulls gently upward, like a balloon tied to a string. It lifts the blade away from the dark bottom.

Blades Reach the Light

Step three: the blades rise into the light. Up near the surface, the blades catch plenty of sunshine. They use it to make sugar, which feeds the whole kelp plant.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a kelp float! The float is a gas-filled bulb. The blade is a leaf-like part that catches sunlight. And the stipe is the stem that connects everything. A float is a built-in buoy for a solar panel made of leaves!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Without floats, kelp would sink and sprawl on the dark seafloor. The gas inside the floats is a lot like the air around us. Kelp floats often wash up on beaches after storms. Living kelp belongs in the water, so leave it attached where it grows.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Let's think about floats. Why lift the blades instead of the holdfast? What do you think is inside the float? Hold an air-filled balloon underwater. Which way does it want to go? If you visit a beach with a grown-up, look at washed-up kelp, but leave living kelp alone.
