Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why don't most sharks hunt people?

The Big Idea

Sharks hunt fish, seals, and other ocean animals. A person has a strange, bony shape and is not what sharks normally eat. Most sharks never bite a person at all, and when a shark does bite by mistake, it usually lets go.

The Water Is Murky

Step one: the water is murky. In cloudy water, a shark cannot see very well. It relies on other clues, like movement and smell.

A Splash Looks Like Prey

Step two: a splash looks like prey, and the shark checks. Splashing can look like a seal or a fish in trouble. The shark swims over to investigate, and a mistake can happen.

The Taste Is Wrong

Step three: the taste is wrong, and the shark lets go. People do not taste or feel like a seal or a fish. So the shark swims away. Sharks are hunters of ocean animals, not villains looking for kids.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at what sharks eat! A fish is typical shark food. A seal is typical shark food, too. But a swimmer is not food, and it is not what a shark is looking for.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Lifeguard flags and local advice beat dares every time. Swim in groups, and listen to the lifeguards. Avoid splashing a lot near seal areas, especially at dawn and dusk. Respect the water, because it is the shark's home.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! List the animals that sharks usually eat. Draw a seal's shape, then a swimmer's shape. Why is a seal silhouette more convincing than a person on a dock? And what two clues tell a shark that a meal is the wrong food?
