What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is a great white pale underneath?
The Big Idea
A great white is dark gray on top and white underneath. That is a trick called countershading. From above, its dark back blends with the deep, dark water. From below, its pale belly blends with the bright sky.
Dark Back, Seen From Above
Step one: a dark back faces the view from above. A bird or a sea creature looking down sees a dark back against dark water. The shark seems to vanish into the depths.
Pale Belly, Seen From Below
Step two: a pale belly faces the view from below. A fish looking up sees a pale belly against the bright surface. Sunlight shines down, so the white belly matches the light.
The Outline Fades
Step three: the outline fades. Dark above and pale below makes the shark's shape look flat and blurry. Prey may not notice it until it is very close.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at the great white! Its dark back hides it from above. Its pale belly hides it from below. Together, they make a disappearing act.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Penguins use countershading too. So do orcas and many fish. Nature already painted it. No paint job needed! And watch sharks from a safe distance. Never swim toward a fin.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Draw a fish on paper, and color it dark on top and pale underneath. Hold it up and look at it from the side. Does its shape look flatter and fainter? Now ask: why would a white belly fool a fish looking up? And what would a dark belly do instead?
