Why Does a Hammerhead Have a Hammer?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a hammerhead have a hammer?

The Big Idea

A hammerhead's head is a long, flat bar, with an eye at each tip. Under the head are special sensors that can feel faint electricity from other animals. That shape is a tool, not a joke!

The Head Sweeps

Step one: the head sweeps the sand. A hammerhead swims low and swings its wide head from side to side. It works a bit like a metal detector.

Sensors Feel a Hidden Animal

Step two: sensors feel a hidden animal. All animals give off faint electric signals, even when they hide. A hammerhead can feel them, so a buried stingray cannot hide.

Wide Eyes Check Both Sides

Step three: wide-set eyes look left and right. Eyes far apart give a wide view all around. Then the shark pins its meal to the seafloor with its flat head.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the hammer! The wide head is a long, flat bar. There is an eye at each tip. And tiny electro-sensors dot the underside, ready to feel hidden prey.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! There are several kinds of hammerhead sharks. Their electro-sensors can find prey buried in sand. Eyes at the tips of the hammer give a wide view. And give wild sharks room. The hammer is not a toy.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Hold a ruler across your forehead, and picture an eye at each end. That is a wide view! Now sweep a magnet over a table, and imagine sensing hidden things. Why put eyes at the ends of a bar? And what can electricity sensing do that eyes cannot?

Outro

A hammerhead is a shark with a built-in scanner. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
