Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some sharks look like carpets?
The Big Idea
Carpet sharks, such as wobbegongs, have blotchy, patterned skin and little tassels around the mouth. That makes them look just like the reef floor. Prey swims close, and the shark is already there!
The Shark Lies Still
Step one: the shark lies still. A wobbegong rests on the seafloor, hardly moving for hours. It saves energy and waits for a snack to come by.
Pattern Matches the Floor
Step two: the pattern matches the floor. Its brown and tan blotches look just like rocks, sand, and seaweed. The tassels around its mouth break up the outline of its head.
Prey Comes Near
Step three: prey comes near, and the shark lunges. A small fish swims close, thinking it is just a rock. In a flash, the shark opens wide and snaps up its meal.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a carpet shark! The tassels are the beard-like fringe around the mouth. The reef floor is the shark's hiding spot. And the mottled skin is the blotchy pattern that matches it.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! On a reef, waiting can beat chasing. The tassels break up the outline of the head. Wobbegongs live in the seas around Australia and nearby. And camouflage is not an invitation to touch. Leave reef sharks on the reef.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Draw a rocky, sandy floor. Now color a shark in the same blotchy pattern, and hide it. Can a friend spot it? Why would waiting beat chasing on a reef? And what job do the tassels do?
