Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do dolphins ride a boat's wave?

The Big Idea

A moving boat pushes up a bulge of water at the front, called the bow wave. A dolphin can surf that moving slope, and keep up with almost no extra work. It is just like a surfer riding a wave!

The Boat Pushes Water

Step one: the boat pushes water. As a boat moves, it shoves water out of its way. That water piles up into a bulge at the front, called the bow.

A Slope Forms

Step two: a slope forms, and the dolphin slides onto it. The front of the wave curves upward, like a gentle hill of water. The dolphin positions itself right on that moving slope.

The Push Carries It

Step three: the push carries the dolphin. The water is already moving forward, so the dolphin gets a free push. It steers with tiny movements of its fins and tail, and hardly has to swim.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a bow ride! The boat hull pushes the water. The bow wave is the moving slope in front. And the dolphin rides right on the front of the wave.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Dolphins also ride the wakes of whales and big ships. A moving slope saves lots of energy. If dolphins come, just watch. If they leave, let them go. Speeding at dolphins is not a game. A grown-up drives the boat, and you watch.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Fill a tub or a big sink with water. Push a spoon slowly through, and watch the bulge it makes. That is a tiny bow wave! Why is a moving slope cheaper than swimming hard? And what happens if the boat stops?

Outro

A bow wave is a gift of moving water, and the dolphin just accepts the ride. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
