Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do sharks have so many teeth?

The Big Idea

A shark's teeth grow in rows. When a front tooth falls out, a new one from the row behind moves up to take its place. Hunting is rough on teeth, so a shark always has a refill row ready. Some sharks go through thousands of teeth in a lifetime!

A New Tooth Forms

Step one: a new tooth forms in the back. Behind the front teeth, spare rows are growing inside the jaw. They are tucked away, like extra tools in a toolbox.

It Moves Forward

Step two: it moves toward the front. A shark's teeth are not set in deep roots. They sit in the gums, so they can shift forward. The rows slowly slide ahead, a bit like a conveyor belt.

A New Tooth Takes Over

Step three: the old tooth falls out, and the new one takes its spot. A worn or broken tooth falls out, and a fresh, sharp one moves in. So the shark can keep hunting, with a mouth that restocks itself!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a shark's jaw! The front tooth is the one doing the work. Spare rows are waiting in the back. When one falls out, the spares move forward.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Shark teeth found on a beach are usually already shed. Some sharks use thousands of teeth in a lifetime. A shark's skeleton is made of cartilage, which is bendy, not hard bone. And never pull a tooth from a living shark.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look at photos of shark teeth in a book or a museum. Draw a front tooth, with rows of spares behind it. What is the job of a sharp triangle? And why are spare teeth better than one set for life?

Outro

A shark mouth is a toolbox that restocks itself! Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
