Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do dolphins click?

The Big Idea

Dolphins make rapid clicks, then listen for the echoes that come back. The echoes help them paint a picture of fish, nets, and the seafloor, even in murky water. This amazing skill is called echolocation.

The Dolphin Clicks

Step one: the dolphin makes a click. Air passes through tiny passages in its head, making fast clicks. A fat-filled bump on its forehead, called the melon, aims the sound forward.

It Hits a Fish

Step two: the sound hits a fish. Sound bounces off things, just like a ball off a wall. The echo that comes back carries clues about the size, shape, and distance of the fish.

The Brain Makes a Map

Step three: the brain turns the echo into a map. The lower jaw picks up the returning echo and passes it to the ears. The brain builds a sound picture, so the dolphin knows where its dinner is hiding.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a click! The melon is the fatty forehead that aims the click. The click path travels out toward the fish. The echo bounces back. And the jaw receiver picks up the echo.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Bats use echoes in the air in a similar way. Echoes work even in murky water, where eyes struggle. Boat noise can mask clicks, so give wild dolphins space. And quiet watching is better than tapping on the glass of a tank.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Stand a few steps from a big wall, and clap once. Listen for the echo. Now step farther back. How does the echo change? Why would sound beat eyes in murky water? And what is the melon for?

A click is a question, and the echo is the answer. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
